Walter and mother are at odds over how to spend the insurance check for ten-thousand-dollars. Walter has a get rich quick scheme, investing in a liquor store, while mama wants a house in a descent neighborhood. Both have different value systems about the money but come together later in the play. Walter finds the strength to support his mother when she insists on staying in the predominantly white neighborhood.
