Both are profoundly unhappy. Much of their conflict has to do with lbeing in abject poverty and Walter's self esteem problems. Walter feels that he is wasting his life working as a chauffeur. He drives rich white people around and feels no dignity. He does not earn enough to support his family, so he drinks as an escape. Ruth just wants a stable family that she can feed
