Presuming Lena's character follows the dictates of the way she was protrayed in the play, Lena is a selfless, motherly figure, who protects her family and expects the best from them at all times. All of her decisions are made based upon the family unit, she isn't thinking of herself, she's thinking of the future.... her legacy.... the future of her family. She wants her son, her daughter-in-law, her daughter, and her grandchildren to have the things that she could only dream of. She wants Travis to live in a safe neighborhood, with his own backyard, and room to run. She wants her son to care for his family in the same way he was cared for.... she wants her daughter to attain the education she desires. She wants all of them to have the things she never had. Lena is tough but quiet, stern but loving, and she is smart in all the ways that matter.
