Travis is important to the theme of family because he is the future..... Ruth, Walter, and Lena each want Travis to have the things they didn't. Thus, Travis is a connection, his welfare is one of the most important aspects of each of the adult's lives. He learns by watching and listening, he depends on his mother, father, and yes.... his grandmother.
