Walter has a change of heart near the end of the story. He decides not to sell out to Mr. Lindner. He explains to Mr. Lindner that the family will move into the new house and the community will have black neighbours. Mama finally exclaims that Walter has finally become a man: he has made a decision He has finally made a decision that is in the best interest of the family.
