Walter Lee Younger is a 35-year-old chauffeur who has a young son, Travis, with his wife, Ruth. The family lives in small apartment with Walter's mother and sister in the South Side of Chicago. Hansberry describes Walter as a lean, intense man with nervous movements and erratic speaking patterns. I think Walter is a dreamer who refuses to accept a life of poverty. He, however, doesn't seem to want to work to get out of poverty. He is rather naive believing buying a liquor store is the solution to the family's problems.
