The Youngers live in poverty stricken Southside Chicago. Their apartment is a small cramped space where five people have to live. The area is primarily populated by the African American poor. There are few options open to people to try and get out. Many people spiral into socio-economic despair. Although there was no law segregating blacks from whites but reality dictated the affluent suburbs of the North were primarily white and full of promise while the South was poor and full of desperation.
