What do you think of the new film starring Diddy Combs and Felicia Rashad? I saw it Monday night on ABC.
Personally, I was a bit disappointed. Hansberry's Walter Lee is a passionate, explosive man. Combs doesn't come across as that way. He is almost meek at times. The only emotional explosion comes from Rashad when Lena realizes that the money is gone. This book is about powerful emotions, but the film doesn't show that power.
Rashad does a good job portraying Lena, but she is not believable because to me she doesn't look old enough. I picture a woman of about 60, and Rashad looks much younger.
One scene I really did like was at the end when Walter picks up the plant. At first I thought, NO! It's supposed to be Mama who does that! But then I saw how she came in to get it from him, and I liked the symbolism of Walter now taking care of the plant that was once Mama's job.
