The central theme in the novel, A Passage to India, is that of culture clash. The fundamental differences in race, language, sexual equality and religion create a major chasm between the Indians the British, who are sent to govern them. The British live in India, but they isolate themselves.... they live in their own community, socialize in their own “club”, perform British plays, and host British parties, all from which the natives are excluded.
