What does the use of expression "bridge party" say about how the British considered these encounters between the Indians and themselves?

It says there is a massive divide between the two which needs a "bridge" to connect the two.

A "Bridge Party" is an actual party. This type of party was given in order to socially "bridge" the gulf between the East and West.
