Swift's criticism of the upper class in reaction to England's view of the Irish is apparent from the start. His extreme descriptions serve as an illustration of the harsh and inexcusable treatment of those living in poverty. Swift's suggestion of "devouring" the Irish children directly illustrates his belief that the wealthy live at the expense of the poor.
