Achebe is addressing the complacency of the people, a complacency that allows the government to do as it likes without question. When a corrupt government is allowed to go unchallenged, its power is all encompassing. The people must stay alert, ask questions, challenge injustices, and hold officials accountable in order to check and eliminate corruption.
