Beah used to recite Shakespeare for the adults in his community in the town square. His father was very proud of him, and Beah enjoyed showing how well he spoke English.

Lieutenant Jabati quoted a line from Julius Caesar to Beah that seemed relevant to them both.

“Cowards die many times before their deaths…”
