Why did ishmael beah stayed in the army? support your evidence

Basically Ishmael did not have much of a choice. Leaving the army was desertion and he probably would have been killed. Also the government forces gave him food and a sense of security. He also felt he was somehow avenging what the rebel forces had done to his family. Beah also was used to the drugs he was given by the army.
