I suppose that this is a true, as far as we can gather, account of what this guy went through. This very personal experience makes the first person point of view that much more powerful. His angst, pain, innocence, and frustrations come to the reader raw and without pretence. Ishmael often describes atrocities in a matter of fact way because they simply have become the realities of life in an African war zone. A film often comes from the interpretations of the directors, actors, and studio's involved. Although a movie might prove effective in conveying a given subject, it is still designed from a particular perspective and to sell tickets.
