This, unless I missed something, was never stated in the book. His parents are separated. Ishmael is a sensitive boy and, as a child, seems to have strong values. He is protective of his family and respectful to his elders. As the novel progresses and Ishmael is turned into a child soldier, his definition of manhood is severely altered.
