Neo- imperialism is essentially has to do with wealthy or powerful nations  extending their influence into a less developed one, especially in exploiting that nation's resources. Much of the conflict in Beah's country has to do with foreign interests in their natural resources like diamonds. Being a third war ravaged world country, various factions compete for control over resources. Innocent people are caught in the middle of very violent and brutal turf wars.
