How is the theme of savagery and civilization developed in A Long Way Gone?

Beah is simply in a broken society where war is the only reality. War drains the civilization out of the most "civil" societies. To simply survive Beah must do unthinkable things. What most children take for Granted (food, shelter, security....) Beah must become a child soldier for. There is no room in his world for civilization.
