Ishmael and his companions stayed in Kamator into the planting season. When they first arrived, they worked as watchmen in return for food and shelter. At planting time, they had to join the community, as all of the village's inhabitants were farmers. One hand washed the other.

The village inhabitants were all farmers, so I had no way to escape this fate.
