Ishmael's music actually saves the boys' lives in Chapter Nine. When the boys arrive at the village, the villagers are certain the boys present a threat. After Ishmael drops the rap tape out of his pocket, the Chief questions him about its contents. The music, as well as the boys' dance, convinces the Chief and villagers that the boys do not pose a threat.
