A Long Way Gone

(Chapter3, page24) Why did the rebels attack the towns so fiercely? What was their goal? Does it make sense to you?

I think I forgot to out but; this is in chapter 3!!

The rebels attack fiercely in order to intimidate and fend off any defense on the part of the villagers. Their goal is to take hostages and recruit. Although it makes no sense to me, they are quite successful in their bloody endeavors.
