A Long Way Gone

Although most of the book’s events occur in Sierra Leone, American culture is a pervasive theme in the memoir and in the author’s life. What positive influences does American culture have on Beah? Negatives?

American culture has positive effects on Beah in a few different situations. Rap music was responsible for saving his life (and his friend's) on more than one occasion. Violent media could be cites as a negative effect. Movies like Rambo glorified violence and death and were used to toughen up young recruits.

American culture has a huge positive effect on Beah's situation. His rap music has saved him and his friends lives more than once. A negative influence American culture has on Beah regarding the war is violent media. The rebels are probably watching terrifying movies about war and making the little recruited children watch them to toughen them up and/ or threaten them.
