A Long Way Gone

After the death of his uncle, Ishmael writes, "I have to try to get out, I thought, and if that doesn't work, then it is back to the army".

What does Ishmael mean by this and why would he say this?

Beah knows that he has to do something or die like his uncle. He cannot survive on his own: he is only a boy. He either gets to safety or seeks the safety of the army as a child soldier.
