Why doesn't Mary Alice want to visit Grandma in the summer of 1930?

Mary Alice finds Grandma's hometown to be slow and boring. She specifically doesn't like the fact she needs to use an outhouse, in adition to the fact that she's afraid of her grandmother's tomcat.
