What important attributes does he reveal about himself in chapters 1-8? What kinds of things does he conceal?

It is revealed that Grant teaches at the local elementary school.

Grant is reluctant to involve himself in the affairs of the quarter, the poor black neighborhood where most of the novel takes place.

Grant is more educated than most of the people in his village, he is a disengaged teacher, admitting that he rarely pays attention to his students’ work since he already knows who will do well and who won’t.

Grant is reluctant to give the lessons to Jefferson and explains to Sam that it is a favor to his aunt.
