This is only a short answer space but I can comment. Grant, Miss Emma, and Tante Lou all go to visit Henri Pichot, a wealthy plantation owner who is married to the sheriff’s sister. They, being black, have to go through the kitchen door. This is expected of blacks. Blacks expect to be treated badly by whites. I don't think any of the African Americans consider that Jefferson will get a fair trial in a white court.
