The church is an important symbol in A Lesson Before Dying--especially in the context of Grant's story. When he leaves the church, he gives up any hope of effecting positive change in his corrupt society. The only way to regain that hope seems to be his "repentance" before Jefferson. In this way, Jefferson is a sort of extension of the church or even a Christ figure.
