A Lesson Before Dying

Tante Lou, Miss Emma, and Vivian are used to taking care of themselves and others. Explain the role of women in the novel. What was their function in this society? Was their contribution and sacrifice recognized?

I need to know what it means after I read "A Lesson Before Dying"; I was giving an 1st assignment before college and I need to write a 500 words essay given a topic they posted on email address to me after attend summer orientation. And not only that, I find this question difficult for me to understand since I have mild Autism meaning difficult communicating. So, can u help me answer this question please?
