how does the radio mark a turn in grants relationship with Jefferson?

I think that Grant feels listening to a radio would connect Jefferson to the outside world. For the first time Grant wants to accept Jefferson into the world around him. Ironically Grant sees just how much the world (the white world) refuses to accept blacks in general when he tries to purchase the radio.
