Initially, Grant accepts Tante Lou's request with reluctance, as he hesitates to become involved in with the affairs of the poverty stricken quarter he worked so hard to escape. None-the-less, over the course of the novel we see Jefferson come to be something more than a favor done for Tante Lou, as Grant comes to value, respect, and care for him. Jefferson's transformation doesn't come from instruction.... it comes from love and compassion.
