The play is written in the early 1900's in an unnamed agricultural community in America. It takes place in the kitchen of Minnie Foster. Here are a few quotes:

She had met Mrs. Peters the year before at the county fair.

It had always been a lonesome-looking place. It was down in a hollow, and the poplar trees around it were lonesome-looking trees.

She looked around the kitchen. Certainly it was not "slicked up." Her eye was held by a bucket of sugar on a low shelf. The cover was off the wooden bucket, and beside it was a paper bag--half full.
