From A Story called "A Journal of the Plague Year".

The actions of the people infected by the plague illustrate their desperation. They hid from officials, attempted to cover up their illnesses, and panicked by the isolation imposed upon them did anythng they could to escape. All of these actions only served to further spread the plague. These people were frightened and crazed.
