The purpose of Daniel Defeos journal of the plague is to inform the reader. It is not wholely a work of fiction, but it does have I grant you, elements of fiction in the story.  What it is without doubt a very powerful description of London during the Great Plague of London in 1665. The only othe account that we have at the time is from Samuel Pepes diaries. This is more systematic and detailed than Pepe's account.

It also has relvance for today: with the threat of a bird flu pandemic reaching our shores. Of course now we have medicine and science to help us, but we are still even today at the mercy of disease. So, if you do read it bare this in mind and don't have nightmares!
