In some ways the cage signifies the way in which the Hunger Artist is trapped in his obsession to be the best at something. After his death, they replace him with an animal, so his "hungering" becomes nothing more than a circus side show. He is caged both physically and mentally and ultimately has to die there, since he feels he can now do nothing else.
