i cant seem to find why henry has a false feeling of soldiering in the army, anyone know?

"false feeling of soldiering"
I think Henry has a false feeling of soldiering because he is not Italian and he is really not part of the army. He is an American Ambulance driver for the Italian army.
Henry also does not have any sense of loyalty to a country or to a cause. He is a lost soul in a lost world.
