Material things disappear with time. Beauty remains and is immortal.

Images:

The urn: The urn represents the Greek culture and history. It is the beauty that remains (and has been conserved), whereas human actions disappear.

The happy melodist: the image of the poet and his relationship to the universe as a whole. The poet has an abstract way of looking at things; immortality, romance.
