The story is set in Norway during the Victorian Era, but could in fact symbolize most any middle class home in the period..... anywhere. Victorian morals and values would have a distinct effect upon the actions and ideas of the drama. Gender roles were well defined, it was a patriarchal society. Men held dominion over their wives and the check book; women were expected to be submissive.
