what is the setting of the play? what effect does the setting have upon the actions and ideas of the drama

The story is set in Norway during the Victorian Era, but could in fact symbolize most any middle class home in the period..... anywhere. Victorian morals and values would have a distinct effect upon the actions and ideas of the drama. Gender roles were well defined, it was a patriarchal society. Men held dominion over their wives and the check book; women were expected to be submissive.
