Our first impression of Nora is one of a generous woman bearing gifts. She seems to be the perfect wife and mother. Note, this impression is quickly diminished when Helmer arrives and chides her for wastefulness.

Helmer immediately appears to be a doting husband, but after a few brief moments we see that he treats her in the condescending manner with which a father would treat his daughter when she doesn't act in a way he believes fitting.
