A Cyborg Manifesto

A Cyborg Manifesto Analysis

Being a feminist, Donna Haraway can’t help trying to create a "political myth" that is faithful to feminism, socialism, and even materialism. Some people might exclaim that it is a pure dystopia, that the future that will never come, but let’s try to refrain from jumping to conclusions. The world has already proved itself to be a wondrous or rather bizarre place, so we never know what will happen tomorrow. Maybe, just maybe, this myth will be our reality one day.

The author doesn't stop criticizing the Western world that is ruled by white male heterosexuals. However, she doesn’t blame only them, even her fellow feminists are criticized. Donna Haraway writes this manifesto to show us that there is a possibility of a different world.

The essayist refuses to spare readers’ feelings and destroys stereotypes gladly and readily. The first one to be demolished by her is about the nature of mankind. We got used to an idea of our exceptionalism, we treasure our uniqueness, stating that we are the pinnacle of evolution. Is it really so? It turns out to be that a line between us and animals is rather fine. Regardless if we like it or not, we are just a part of nature. Cyborgs’ existence is another reason to reevaluate our attitude to animals, for they are hybrids of human beings, animals, and technologies. However, there are still many people who refuse to accept an idea of us being related to other living beings.

According to Donna Haraway, the cyborg is a creature in a postgender world. Thus, she expects that there won’t be place for race, class, and language differences in the future. Let’s think for a moment, why the writer is against such concepts as race and gender. The answer is quite obvious, for they are the main stumbling block for us. They prevent us from understanding each other, the stereotypes that we created don’t let us see a situation clearly and reduce our chances at successful communication. People need unity now more than ever. Conflicts, wars, and increasing crime rate prove this idea just fine. United nation humanism, neoimperialism, and communications enhancement are supposed to destroy the boundaries between us, so that we could be able to coexist peacefully.

Readers can agree or disagree with the author. Some ideas do sound too radical or unrealistically, but the truth is that we do need changes. No need to start a war with languages, cultures, and other aspects of us, for it will lead to terrible consequences. However, we can try to be more tolerant and understanding not only to each other but other living creatures on the Earth.
