Can someone help me understand the meaning of the title? What is the work clockword referring to?

A Clockwork ORange was the title of the book the old man was writing in his study before Alex and his droogs take over the house.

  The title refers to the changing of an being capable of choice into an unthinking, mechanical entity, as was done to Alex. 
  Burgess himself, in an interview, said it meant "The application of a mechanistic morality to a living organism oozing with juice and sweetness."
