Stave 1 is the exposition of the play. We see Scrooge defined by his greed and discontent. The act establishes Scrooge's personality for the reader. The end of the stave, visit from Marley's ghost, sets the beginning of Scrooge's conversion.

This was dealt with already. I have not seen the 1917 vesrsion film version of this but I'm pretty sure it would match the original text.
