Why do you think the Dave’s father and brothers allowed the abuse to go on without telling anyone?

As he grows older, Dave comes to hate Father for allowing Mother to hurt him. Father gets so fed up with mother's anger that he packs up and leaves. He abandons his son. I saw him as a pretty weak father and parent figure.
