Most of Poe's protagonists are insane. They brag about their Machiavellian brilliance while justifying the horrid acts that they perpetrate on others. Their manic emotions and delusions of grandeur mark them as unreliable narrators as soon as they speak. We know the protagonist is of some influence as he has given his servants the night off and has his own whine chasm.
