Winston desperately hopes that the Proles will wake up out of their stupor of ignorance and rise against the Party. The only "hope" lies in the Proles because they far outnumber anything the party can throw at them. The masses rising up will always win. Unfortunately the Proles are stuck in their ignorance. Their primal needs are met and they simply don't know or care that there could be a better world.
