1984

why do you think the author made that choice and how does it serve the story?

The world of 1984 is quite bleak, yet the subplot revolves around a love affair.

The choice of using a love story as a subplot allows the reader to see exactly how bleak and isolated the world of 1984 truly is. Love is an intrinsicly important part of humanity...... feelings for other people are what make us human. What would we become if all emotional ties disappeared or disallowed?
