why did winston refer to the lottery as an anodyne for the proles?

The Proles love the lottery. Besides porn, alcohol, babies.....the lottery occupies the minds of many Proles. It is doubtful that anybody actually wins the lottery, the rush of gambling is enough to distract the Proles from their miserable existence.
