How is Winston fatalistic? Should he be?

Winston writes his diary in a little space meant for a bookshelf in the pre-revolution days. The telescreen is at an angle that can't pick him up. Winston is fatalistic. He really can't be otherwise. The society is predicated on loss of hope. Really hope as a concept is fading fast. Winston knows he is dead as soon as he writes in the diary.
