Obrien truly feels he is "curing" Winston of his mental illness. O'Brien has taken a special interest in Winston because he is a challenge. Like O'Brien himself, Winston owns a keen intellect. Winston finally admits to all his "indiscretions" including Julia, the diary and his "illness".
