What is Winston's last toast? Why is the meaning of that toast the most important?

Winston makes a toast to the past. O’Brien agrees, "the past is more important." The past is something Winston desperately wants to return too. Although there was inequality, there was still passion, love, anger and hate. The "brotherhood" is fighting to return the world to this.
