What is meant by the statement, "The room was a world, a pocket of the past where extinct animals could walk."?

This refers to the room above Mr. Charrington's shop. It was a room from the past, where old relics hung from an age long since destroyed. Winston too is very much a relic trying to find meaning in a meaningless present.
